Macula Degeneration

Age related Macula Degeneration (AMD) is caused by the deterioration of the macula (central portion of the retina). This affects how you see straight ahead.  The peripheral vision remains intact so although it is a devastating condition, it is not a sentence of blindness

Diagnosis

  • OCT and retinal images scans map the area affected

  • Visual Fields

We also use a very simple grid (Amsler) that maps the central 5º of vision.  The changes are dramatically evident and mapped.

Risk factors

  • Age (>55 years)

  • Family history of AMD

  • Race - caucasians are more likely to develop the disease

  • Smoking
